What is genital aesthetics and why is it done?
All the procedures that correct the aesthetic anatomy of the female external genital organs and give them a more aesthetic appearance are called “genital aesthetics”. Depending on congenital/genetic/individual factors, pregnancy, giving birth and aging; genital anatomy may deteriorate, which may cause physical and psychosocial problems in the individual. Deformed external genital anatomy creates some problems in choosing appropriate clothes, walking, playing sports or sexual intercourse. By eliminating these problems together with genital aesthetic procedures, it is aimed to increase the self-confidence of the patient and the pleasure during sexual intercourse.
What are the genital aesthetic procedures?
“Labiaplasty” (inner labia aesthetics), “vaginoplasty” (vaginal tightening surgery) and pubis aesthetics (removal of excess pubic fat) are the genital aesthetic procedures applied.
What is “labiaplasty” (inner labia aesthetics), for what purpose and how is it done?
Depending on genetic / individual factors, chronic traumas, pregnancy, childbirth, and aging; excess tissues, asymmetry or prolapse may occur in the inner labia (labium minus). When this happens, problems may be encountered in choosing suitable clothes, walking, doing sports or during sexual intercourse. This creates functional and psychosocial problems. In the “labiaplasty” procedure; It is aimed to remove excess and sagging tissues that disrupt the genital aesthetic anatomy and cause asymmetry. The procedure is performed with sedation or under general anesthesia. Before the procedure, the excess parts are marked, and the excess parts are removed in accordance with the genital anatomy. Sutures are placed inside so that they are not visible from the outside and are not subject to trauma. The operation takes an average of 45 minutes. Thanks to the location of the sutures and the healing capacity of the labium, the scar will not be visible. There is no need to remove stitches as dissolving sutures will be used. Since only the excess parts will be removed, no loss in functionality is expected. On the contrary, parts that are exposed to trauma and make sexual intercourse difficult will be removed. So, this will have positive effects on sexual life.
What is “vaginoplasty” (vaginal tightening surgery), for what purpose and how is it done?
Vaginal opening/canal enlargement or vaginal laxity and may occur due to genetic / individual factors, traumas, pregnancy, aging, and mostly after childbirth. The correction of this relaxation /enlargement and the narrowing of the vaginal opening & canal is called “vaginoplasty”. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes an average of 45 minutes. After the patient sleeps in the operating room, he is placed in the lithotomy position and a vaginal speculum is placed. In accordance with the markings, a triangular mucosal piece is removed from the posterior wall of the vagina, the muscles are brought closer, and the vagina is narrowed. The scars are located inside the vagina and are not visible from the outside. Thanks to the good healing capacity of the vaginal mucosa, scars are indistinct. The sutures used are absorbable, so they do not need to be removed. Narrowing the vagina provides functional benefits and positively affects sexual life.
What is pubis aesthetics (removal of excess pubic fat), for what purpose and how is it done?
The pubis is the slightly puffy and hairy area located below the abdomen and on the upper part of the female external genitalia. In some women, this area has a larger and fatty structure than it should be. The aesthetic procedure that can be done in this area is the removal of excess fat tissue with liposuction (See Liposuction (Fat Removal) Section). The appropriate point is determined, and a 3-4 mm incision is made in that area. With the help of cannulas advanced through the incision, the excess fat tissues in the pubis area are disrupted and taken out of the body. Silicone-backed compression foam is placed on the area. This dressing is removed after 1 week. Minimal pain, edema and bruising are expected. Edema is maximum on the 3rd day, starts to decrease after the 3rd day, almost completely disappears at the end of the 6th week.
There may be bruising, color changes (purple-green-yellow), stiffness, tingling or numbness in the operation area. The mentioned conditions usually improve within the 3rd week.
What is the post-operative period after genital aesthetic surgery applications?
After genital aesthetic surgeries, the patient does not need to stay in the hospital overnight, he can be discharged after the procedure and return to social life in a short time. Minimal pain and edema are expected and will decrease with appropriate anti-inflammatory drugs in a short time. Genital hygiene is very important after labiaplasty and vaginoplasty. It is recommended to use antibiotics and creams that will be prescribed to you. After these surgeries, minimal bleeding in the form of spotting may occur, and this will disappear with healing. Since absorbable sutures are used in all genital aesthetic surgery procedures, these sutures do not need to be removed. It is recommended to abstain from sexual intercourse for 6 weeks in order to ensure the healing and prevent hygiene problems. In genital aesthetic procedures, negative impact on functionality is not expected. On the contrary, these procedures have positive effects as they provide functional, aesthetic, and psychological gains.
Summary
Existing or acquired deformities in the external genital area (vulva, vagina, labium, pubis) can cause physical discomfort, lack of self-confidence and sexual problems with partner. With genital aesthetic applications, it is aimed to make the person much better functionally, psychosocially, and sexually. These procedures should be performed by experienced hands in order not to disrupt the genital aesthetic anatomy and functionality. You can see the related articles in the References section.
